Mint, one of the oldest medicinal herbs, is an ancient remedy recognized since 1000 BC in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine and an effective Egyptian panacea. Mint originated in North Africa and the Mediterranean, where it was often used as a form of currency. In the Ebers Papyrus, an ancient Egyptian medical writing dating back to 1550 BC, mint is described as having a soothing effect on stomach pains.
Mentha piperita is a hybrid herbaceous plant, obtained by crossing Mentha spicata and water mint (Mentha aquatica), and is the world’s most important commercial aromatic plant and the most widely cultivated for steam-distilled essential oil.
As early as 1721, the plant was taken up as Mentha piperitis sapore in the pharmacopoeia of London. At the same time, it was introduced to central Europe by doctors where, along with chamomile, it became the most commonly used medicinal herb.
Today, mint leaves are used all over the world, especially in Western and Middle Eastern countries, as infusions, tinctures, teas, extracts and essential oils.
The flowers and leaves of the fresh plant are harvested by hand at the peak of flowering. The plant material is naturally steam distilled, the most efficient method used to extract volatile compounds and isolate the essence of the plant. Steam vaporizes the volatile compounds, which eventually undergo a process of condensation and collection, thus preserving the beneficial active principles that give the oil its renowned medicinal properties.
Due to its high content of menthone, menthol, flavonoids, tannins, polyphenols, triterpenes, tocopherols, carotenoids, minerals, isomenthone and various isomers of menthol, Mentha piperita essential oil has the widest application of all essential oils.
Its pharmacological properties include anaesthetic, antimicrobial, antifungal, anthelmintic and antioxidant effects. Peppermint helps improve digestion, freshen breathing and improve concentration. In addition, Mentha piperita essential oil soothes allergies, headaches and clears blocked airways.
Peppermint oil is ideal for topical use, applied to the skin, to treat problems such as headaches, muscle and joint pain. Peppermint essential oil is also used to soothe inflammation, irritation and itching of the skin and scalp. It accelerates wound healing and is also touted as a natural remedy for soothing insect bites and relieving pruritus, a common skin infection that leads to rashes, hives and itching.
In aromatherapy, the peppermint oil is used to treat coughs and colds, reduce pain, improve mental function and reduce stress.

ADMINISTRATION:
» For internal use, diluted with honey or edible oil:
3-4 drops twice a day. The dose is mixed in a teaspoon of honey (diabetics: a quarter teaspoon of edible oil). Use for 7-14 days.
It may be repeated after a break of 2 weeks.
» For internal use in empty vegetable capsules:
Administration in capsules allows better assimilation of the oils, as they go directly into the stomach where they act at the gastric level. Open an empty vegetable capsule, introduce the essential oil with the syringe/dipper together with the edible oil as indicated on the leaflet, and close the capsule. It is recommended to swallow the capsules immediately.
» For external topical use, diluted:
In order to avoid any discomfort, dryness, and irritation of the skin, or even the rapid evaporation of the essential oils, it is recommended to apply them together with almond or argan oil. In massage therapies, it is recommended to use diluted in oils with a firmer consistency. Do not apply on open wounds, irritated skin, or sunburn. Test in advance
a small amount on an area of skin.
» Aromatherapy, inhalations:
It is used in ultrasound diffusers and aromatherapy lamps, both for its benefits to the body (relaxing, anti-allergic, decongestant) and to cleanse and disinfect the room of bacteria, fungi, and mold spores Cold inhalations are recommended for relaxation, or hot inhalations (1-3 drops) in respiratory diseases: rhinitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, etc.
